Mirror Lake offers the opportunity to learn swimming techniques during the summer months from qualified, American Red Cross swim instructors. If you would like to sign up, you may download the enrollment form in PDF format and mail it to us. The schedule of classes is as follows:

Session I: July 10 to July 28 (3 weeks)
Session II: July 31 to August 18 (3 weeks)


Monday, Wednesday and Friday:

Level I: 10 to 10:45 AM
Level II: 11 to 11:45 AM

Cost: $129 for 9 lessons

Tuesday and Thursday:

Preschool I: 10 to 10:30 AM
Preschool II: 11 to 11:30 AM

Cost: $69 for 6 lessons

* Minimum of 5 kids to run a class.
* Maximum of 10 per class.
* 5:1 ratio (swimmer to instructor ratio)
* For schedule of level III and higher, please call or email.

Build a class option: We will create a class for you if you have 5 participants!



American Red Cross Swim Level Objectives


Preschool Lessons (3 years to 5 years)

This program provides children opportunity to learn to swim without parental assistance.

Preschool I

Children learn the basic swim skills with extra assistance from our staff. Preschool I participants learn to:

- Enter and exit the water safely
- Basic body positions, including arm and hand movements
- Float on front and back
- Follow basic water rules
- Blowing bubbles
- Kicking
- Use of a life jacket

Preschool II

Children continue to reinforce basic skills with little or no assistance. Preschool II participants learn to:

- Enter and exit the water safely
- Basic body positions, including arm and hand movements
- Float on front and back
- Follow basic water rules
- Blowing bubbles
- Kicking
- Submerge of mouth, nose and eyes
- Introduction to rotary breathing
- Use of a life jacket

Level I: Introduction to Water Skills

- Enter and exit the water safely
- Basic body positions, including arm and hand movements
- Float on front and back
- Exhale underwater through mouth and nose
- Introduction to breath control
- Follow basic water rules
- Blowing bubbles
- Kicking
- Submerge of mouth, nose and eyes
- Open eyes underwater; pick up an object
- Introduction to rotary breathing
- Use of a life jacket

In order to pass Level I student/camper must be able to:

1. Enter unassisted, move 5 yards, bob 5 times to chin level and exit water

2. Float on front with support for 3 seconds, roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds with assistance.

Level II: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

- Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side/dock
- Submerge entire head
- Float on front and back
- Roll over from front to back, back to front
- Swim on front and back while using combined strokes, rhythmic breathing (bobbing)
- Move in the water using a life jacket
- Exit water safely
- Open eyes underwater, pick up object
- Perform front and back glide
- Swim on side
- Tread water using arm and leg motion

In order to pass Level II, student/camper must be able to:

1. Step into chest deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll over to back float, stand up, then back float for 5 seconds and stand up.

2. Push off and swim combined front stroke 15 feet and do the same for the backstroke.

Level III: Stroke Development

- Jump into deep water from the side/dock
- Submerge and retrieve an object
- Use rotary breathing
- Perform survival float
- Butterfly-kick and body motion
- Perform a reaching assist
- Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back
- Dive from kneeling or standing position
- Bob with the head fully submerged
- Perform front and back glide
- Perform front and back crawl
- Perform the HELP and huddle position
- Use Check-Call-Care in an emergency
- Charge from horizontal to vertical position on front and back

In order to pass Level III, student/camper must be able to:

1. Jump into chest deep water from the dock, swim front crawl for 15 yards with face in the water and rhythmic breathing, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim back crawl for 15 yards.

Level IV: Stroke Improvement

- Perform shallow dive or dive from stride position
- Perform feet-first surface dive
- Tread water using sculling arm motions and kick
- Swim underwater
- Perform open turns on front and back
- Use safe diving rules

- Perform the following:
   a. Front and back crawl
   b. Breaststroke
   c. Butterfly
   d. Elementary backstroke
   e. Swim on side using scissors-like kick

In order to pass Level VI the student/camper must be able to:

1. Perform a feet first entry in chest deep water, swim front crawl 25 yards, back float 1 minute in deep water and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.

2. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, tread water 1 minute and swim back crawl 25 yards.

Level V: Stroke Refinement

- Tread water with 2 different kicks
- Perform rescue breathing
- Learn survival swimming
- Standing and shallow dive
- Tuck and pike surface dive
- Front and back flip turn

In order to pass Level V the student/camper must be able to:

1. Perform a shallow dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, back float for 2 minutes, swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards.

2. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, tread water for 2 minutes and swim back crawl for 50 yards.
